In this seminar we will consider how to build inclusive Students as Partners and educational opportunities with students and staff. Drawing on our experiences at the University of Westminster we will discuss how we approach inclusion, the reflexive practices we engage with and how we collectively develop our visions for the future. Central to our approach is to acknowledge and centre the voices of traditionally marginalised students and staff. Our work is guided by our Westminster Co-Creators Principles, at the heart of which is the belief that partnership relationships should aim to be non-hierarchical, enable a shift away from traditional student : staff roles, and equally acknowledge the contributions and experiences of all individuals involved. We will use examples from our work with the Students as Co-Creators and the Pedagogies for Social Justice projects to illustrate these approaches. Understanding that this is a challenging and complex process, we offer this seminar as a step in your University’s and your own journeys toward creating pedagogical spaces in which students and staff alike can flourish.

Students taking ownership of their learning and stepping out of their comfort zone has become one of the major strategic goals of CUHK Strategic Plan 2021–2025. Involving students as partners in teaching and learning development is an essential strategy that encourages students to take bolder steps in their learning journey. On the way to SaP, there are barriers to program design and collaborative teaching and learning. This symposium aims to provide more insights of student-teacher co-creation on curriculum and in the community and valuable experiences sharing from local and international experts.

Dr. Catherine Bovill is considered an international leader in the field of student-faculty co-created curriculum and student-faculty partnership, having published over 50 articles and books in this area and having been invited to present her work and offer consultancy on co-creation in over 10 countries and 50 institutions worldwide. Her latest book Co-creating learning and teaching: towards relational pedagogy in higher education, has been adopted by institutions and learning communities as set reading in North America, Europe and Asia. In 2019-2020 she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and was based at Elon University, North Carolina, USA.

Prof. Darwin Lau of the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, the recipient of the 2019 UGC Teaching Award in the category of Early Career Faculty Members, has been recognized for his achievements in learner-centred and experience-based learning. Although he joined the University only in October 2015, he already has numerous teaching awards under his belt, including the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award 2018 and the University Education Award 2019.
